Background Information on Harrogate
The Victorian spa town of Harrogate has elegant buildings with cast iron canopies decorated with baskets of cascading flowers.

This North Yorkshire town, famed for its vibrant floral displays and celebrated gardens, is home to major events such as the Great Yorkshire Show. It also hosts Britain's largest early spring flower show, staged by the North Of England Horticultural Society, as well as the Great Autumn Flower Show and Late Flowering Chrysanthemum Show. Harrogate is also multiple winner of the Beautiful Britain in Bloom' and 'Entente Floral Awards'.

It is not surprising that Harrogate attracts so many events with many thousands of visitors every year. Encircled by 200 acres of protected open green known as the Stray, this attractive town is the perfect backdrop for special events.

With the Valley Gardens, and the Prospect, Crescent, and Montpelier Gardens, there are few places in the town lacking natural colour and beauty. In the valley Gardens as well as the flowers, there are 36 mineral wells, which flow through the area.

Harrogate offers a wide variety of refreshment venues along with tempting tea-rooms, coffee shops, wine bars and night-clubs; there are a wide choice of restaurants, pizzerias, fast-food outlets, and hospitable pubs.

When you fancy a bite to eat the only difficult decision is what, not where: Spanish, Italian, Indian, French, Chinese Mexican, Greek, Thai...the choice is yours. Whatever your preference, Harrogate has the answer.

Since its early days when the first mineral spring was discovered in 1571, Harrogate flourished and was soon attracting royalty, and visitors to take the waters, as well as enjoy the facilities of its grand buildings and fine shops.

Over the years Harrogate has continuously developed, culminating in the cosmopolitan centre it is today. Signs of its expansion range from its renowned Harrogate International Conference centre, established, as one of Europe's finest: to the Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre.

The contrast of new and old, is a pleasing one and visitors will find a good variety of shops. From High Harrogate to Low Harrogate you will find shops offering antiques to art nouveau: oriental gifts to original prints: lingerie to leather goods: plus exclusive designer labels, high-class jewellery, and kitchen wear. There is, in addition, a full range of specialist services and unique individual retailers with unusual ranges in everything from novel gifts to abstract jewellery.

Within short drives can be found the most delightful countryside, offering opportunities for walking, climbing, horse riding or just sightseeing among the ancient abbeys, stately homes, towns and villages. Harrogate has something for everyone, no matter what time of year. We look forward to your visit!
